Taste the fruits of France with Bizet’s sensual Carmen Suite no 1, an uplifting violin concerto by Saint-Saens (no.3), and Beethoven’s revolutionary ‘Eroica’ Symphony initially dedicated to Napoleon before Beethoven angrily tore up the script on hearing of Napoleon becoming a dictator.

All three pieces in their own way are linked to the themes of liberation and occupation.  The dramatic music in Carmen portrays the liberated Carmen in all her guises.  Saint-Saens’ violin concerto dedicated to the great virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate is one of the great impressionistic works for violin showing off the freedom of the instrument from beautiful melodies to dramatic runs and impressive feats of skill before closing in fiery passages.  Eroica is probably the first symphony to capture the public imagination with themes of idealism and disillusionment, personal greed and the lust for power, the struggle between art and politics.  It is one of the most remarkable, even revolutionary works of art. And a century after Beethoven wrote the work, Toscanini tried to restore reason, famously brushing aside a hundred years of connotations; “Some say it is Napoleon, some Hitler, some Mussolini. For me it is simply Allegro con brio!”

Directed by the Kapelmeister of the Berlin Deutsche Opera, Daniel Cohen and led by Anna Smith of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Jersey Chamber Orchestra will return for the eighth Liberation International Music Festival to present an exciting accessible and entertaining programme.

The soloist in the Saint-Saens is Russian international superstar Boris Brovstyn who won the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition and is feted for his performances in the greatest concert halls worldwide from Moscow to Paris to New York.
